Kieran's Latest Mischief - Spring 2000
Kieran's grown a lot since the last update. He's growing out of babyhood and is rapidly becoming a great little boy.
As you know, Kieran began walking shortly before the last update. He's now walking like a pro. Additionally, he can run in short bursts, walk on tip toes, and even jump. Jumping is one of his latest skills and, though not always perfect, seems to be a lot of fun.
Kieran can now talk as well. I used to list the vocabulary he knew, but that's impossible now. He's learned so much and is learning so fast that we're constantly surprised with what he knows. A brief rundown of his vocabulary includes (but is not limited to) names of many animals, noises that many animals make, vehicles, body parts, colors, and objects around the home.
Kieran's favorite things are vehicles. He loves cars, bikes, trucks, planes, balloons, trains, vans, and boats. Truthfully, he loves anything with wheels on it and, for a long time, called each and every item "car" whether it was a car or a baby's push chair or a vacuum cleaner. His vocabulary has improved, however, and he can name all of the vehicles listed above. (As of this moment, tho, he still refers to the vacuum cleaner as a car..)
We believe it was this love of cars which led him to learning the names of colors so quickly. He knows the following colors: red, yellow, blue, green, brown, black, white, pink, orange, and purple. Knowing these color names has helped him identify one car from another for the past few months.
Kieran enjoys many other toys as well. He still likes books and actually consents to let us read one of them aloud from cover to cover. (In all of his other books he tends to turn pages at random and discuss with us what he sees.) So what is this book? Well, he says, "Sam" and "Ham" over and over until we know what he wants, but the author called it "Green Eggs & Ham."
Kieran has really been enjoying puzzles recently. He's got three of his own that he does well. In addition, he has been doing a great job with the ones at the hospital when we visit. Most are of the "one piece-one hole" variety, but a few are more complex and he's doing a great job.
In addition to the more quantifiable skills listed above, Kieran has been practicing other things, most notably his sense of humor. He really loves to laugh and have fun. Sometimes he illustrates this by telling a story in baby talk then laughing. We certainly don't understand it, but it's cute. Most often, tho, this is recognizable in his impish grin as he runs the other way after we call him or as he tries to back away giggling when we ask him for a hug. In either case, he squeals with laughter as we chase after him.
All in all, Kieran is a wonderful little boy. Despite the occasional "terrible two" behaviors, he is active, interested and happy.
